Webbing between their arms aids them in swimming. The ocean is known for containing eerie-looking creatures like giant mystery squid and angler fish. They propel themselves through the water by flapping their strong fins, not by expelling water forcefully from their siphons-a process called jet propulsion-as other octopuses do. The dumbo octopus (Grimpoteuthis ) is a deep sea animal that lives on the ocean floor at extreme depths of 9,800 to 13,000 feet. Read on to know why dumbo octopus sightings give rare peek at these cute creatures of the deep. The role of cirri is not known, but it’s thought to have something to do with feeding. Flapping like Dumbo, the squid uses these fins to get around. First, it has large fins at the top of its head that look like ears. They are “cirrate” octopuses, a group of deep-sea octopuses that have slender protrusions trailing from their suckers called cirri. Part squid, part octopus, and part fish, the vampire squid has features of all of these. They feed on snails, worms, and other creatures they hoover up from the ocean floor. It took more than 80 years before anyone saw one in the wild, swimming 15,535 feet. Deepest known octopusĭumbo octopuses live at extreme depths in oceans around the world-up to 13,000 feet below the surface-and are the deepest-living octopuses known. Scientists identified the first Bigfin squid specimen, which was caught by fishers near Portugal, in 1907. Due to the octopus living in a pitch-black environment, they dont need ink sacs as a defense mechanism. Unlike other octopus species, umbrella octopuses do not have ink sacs. The dozen or so species that make up Grimpoteuthis are called Dumbo octopuses because of the two large fins-one on either side of the mantle-that protrude like ears.Īdd in the octopus’s small size (generally around eight inches), relatively short arms, bell-shaped body, pale coloring, and tendency to hover over the seafloor, and you’ve got a cephalopod that’s often called the cutest octopus in the world. There are around 13 different species of umbrella octopus living in the ocean, the Dumbo octopus and flapjack octopus being among those 13 species.
